ABSTRACT:
Agricultural price support objectives and soil erosion control goals can be met at lower costs to the federal government through a long-term land retirement program than through the current annual acreage reduction programs, provided an effective program can be implemented. Moreover, crop production can be reduced and a significant portion of the nation's highly erodible cropland can be protected without a reduction in net farm income. One program alternative involves a competitive bidding system to idle highly erodible land. Groups of highly erodible and marginal soils are identified in this analysis of a long-term conservation reserve.
