The SCSA view: Educating tomorrow's leaders

Today's college students and recent graduates just beginning their professional career will be the leaders of the soil and water conservation movement in the decades ahead. We must, therefore, better understand the training they are now receiving, the education, and their expectations for their professional career as conservationists.

I believe there are many of us who graduated from college 20 or 30 years ago who do not properly comprehend what today's students and young professionals are thinking. The education they are receiving is different than what we received. Furthermore, the training they are receiving on the job differs from that of the past.

Their expectations for their chosen career and their “needs” to achieve those expectations are also different. It is important then that today's leaders better understand what our future leaders think and expect.

With this in mind, SCSA has organized a brainstorming session to be conducted during our 1986 annual meeting in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The session will involve students, young professionals, a few advisors to SCSA student chapters, and a select group of today's leaders who are well informed on this subject.
