Quo vadis, SCSA?

WHERE are you going, SCSA? In my view the opportunities before us are essentially unlimited. The only limit we face is our resourcefulness to maximize those opportunities.
SCSA has always been a leader in conservation issue identification. The special conferences this year reflect that: soil and water management on steep lands, use of legumes in conservation tillage, assessment of the conservation provisions in the 1985 farm bill. Leadership in issue identification should continue to be our hallmark.
What are some of the issues? We have heard a lot about the conservation provisions of the Food Security Act and we are likely to hear more. The legislation will be with us for quite a while The conference in November, as good as it will be, will not write the final chapter. In fact, the conference is likely to generate even more ideas that will demand our attention.
SCSA is in a strategic position to address an issue like this that impacts on so many sectors: producers, commodity organizations, environmental groups, not to mention traditional agencies like SCS, ASCS, Extension, FmHA, and others. Our diverse membership, plus the rapport we have with many organizations and agencies, make this issue a natural one …
