A professional society with unique interests and capabilities, like SWCS, has any number of contributions it can make to environmental improvement efforts. There certainly is interest in the natural environment by the general public in most countries. Polls sponsored by a variety of interest groups regularly document this fact. What then is SWCS's role in the environmental improvement arena?

Today, the world's national economies generally intertwine, and they become more intertwined every year. The 1987 stock market crash in the United States helped to demonstrate that linkage among financial markets. Economic interdependence is also illustrated by the mix of national origins we find in the products sold in food stores and other markets.

From a social and political standpoint, the world is also rapidly becoming more interdependent. Several European countries are working toward more common objectives, such as free trade. Other, similar regional and worldwide examples of alliances also exist that recognize the interdependence of separate nations.

Perhaps more compelling than either economic or political linkages are the environmental linkages on our planet. It may …
