A friend of mine who is an accountant recently ended a bitter dispute with his partner by splitting their business. Shortly thereafter, he framed and hung a quotation in his office. It read, “A partnership is a poor ship to sail on”.

Most of us have probably been in a relationship in which we felt taken advantage of, unfairly maligned or criticized, or wrongly accused of being “the problem.” Such an experience is not pleasant. We tend, as a result, to question the value of our association with others and wonder if we could not be just as successful, with much less grief, by going on our own.

As we approach the many environmental issues confronting us, it is clear that now is not the time for going it alone. On the contrary, today, perhaps more than at any time in the planet's history, partnerships will play a critical role in developing effective responses to our environmental problems.
