Research and reporting: the journal in the next millennium for SWCS

We could look back on a rich tradition of research reporting in the Journal of Soil and Water Conservation. But, with the changes in the Journal, and with the changes coming every day in natural resources and in the peoples of the earth, let's look ahead. I have some thoughts to share. These are based on several recent experiences.

One of the most recent experiences was evaluation of the research articles in the Journal in 1997. What an amazing diversity! In 1997, research subjects published in the Journal included water quality, soil quality, CRP, GIS applications, water use efficiency, restoration, economics, sustainable farming and conservation compliance. It was heartening to see in consecutive articles “Soil erosion and sediment yield in forest and agroforestry areas in west Java, Indonesia” and “Occurrence and flux of selected pesticides in surface water of the upper Snake River basin, Idaho, and western Wyoming.” This diversity reflects the interest of the membership, the natural resource community, and SWCS's policy of …
