The following pages of the Journal of Soil and Water Conservation include papers presented at two symposium events held at the 2001 annual conferences of the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) and the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA). On August 4-8, 2001, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, SWCS held the second annual joint symposium organized by the two Societies addressing nutrient management issues following successful efforts at the SWCS 2000 annual conference in Saint Louis, Missouri.
The Soil and Water Conservation Society and the Soil Science Society of America have a long history of partnership, but in recent years have increased collaboration on educational activities for their memberships. As professional and scientific organizations, they have common interests and audiences. Both Societies also recognize an increasing interest from practitioners in stronger connections with the scientific community. To formalize this new relationship, SSSA established a liaison position with SWCS at the Minneapolis meeting in 2000. The liaison is elected by the membership of Division S-06 (Soil and Water Management) within the SSSA and is responsible for coordination of all joint activities and communications between the Societies.
