ONGOING debate about sustainability in natural resource management circles appears to revolve around two issues. The first is a definitional one—What does “sustainability” mean? Frankly, I think we are wasting both time and energy trying to agree on a precise definition. Precision matters little, and we often get hung up on negative labels in our search for agreement. Far more important is that we share a common vision of sustainability, a vision of a world in which our use of natural resources meets today's needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. …
