RT Journal Article SR Electronic T1 Hedgerow distribution and removal in nonforested regions of the Midwest JF Journal of Soil and Water Conservation FD Soil and Water Conservation Society SP 60 OP 64 VO 42 IS 1 A1 Baltensperger, Bradley H. YR 1987 UL http://www.jswconline.org/content/42/1/60.abstract AB County or county-sized areas in Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois were surveyed to obtain information on causes of hedgerow removal. Comparison of historical and recent aerial photographs revealed a considerable range of removal rates, ranging from 0.6% removal/year to 3.1%/year. Although numerous hedgerows were removed between the settlement period and 1940, rates of removal appear to have intensified recently. Significant factors affecting removal were development of centerpivot irrigation systems, urban expansion, and construction or improvement of roads.
