Berg, retired chief of the US. Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service, became the Soil and Water Conservation Society 's representative in Washington, D.C., on January 3, 1983. For the past six years, he has served WCS, one day a week, as a liaison between the international headquarters in Ankeny, Iowa, and the many conservation agencies and organizations and the Congress in the nation's capital. SWCS has a contract with the American Farmland Trust to provide Mr. Berg with office space and limited clerical help. Mr. Berg also serves as senior advisor to AFT; as treasurer of the Natural Resources Council of America, a consortium of conservation organizations to which SWCS belongs; and as a member of the Anne Arundel Conservation District Board in Maryland. Following his appointment as Washington representative in 1983, the JSWC posed a number of questions to Mr. Berg about his views on the work he would be doing for SWCS and the future of land and water conservation.
