Murphy YR 1992 UL http://www.jswconline.org/content/47/2/183.abstract AB Potable wells in Mercer and Burlington Counties, New Jersey, were sampled for nitrate during the spring of 1990. Sixty of the 343 wells sampled were public supply wells; the remainder were private domestic drinking water wells. Nitrate levels were correlated statistically with well depth, use of chemical or organic fertilizer, and presence of a septic tank within 38 m (125 feet) of the well. Nitrate levels in wells from commercial agricultural areas were not significantly higher than levels from wells in residential areas.
