Approximately 1 million people are believed to have died in the conflict. The remaining 1 million, the subject of this article, are housed in camps for refugees in Tanzania and Zaïre. This paper describes the effects of refugees in western Tanzania upon land and water resources. It concludes with recommendations of actions to reduce the adverse environmental impacts of this and future refugee crises. ER -
