These natural resources are becoming limited and are already under intensive use and misuse. The importance of conserving soil productivity and protecting the quality of both soil and water is becoming clear to more people than ever before. This book provides an in-depth view of advances in soil and water conservation in the United States. It contains the scientific papers presented in a symposium entitled “Major Advances in Soil and Water Conservation,” conducted during the 99th American Society of Agronomy Annual Meeting held on November 4 to 8, 2007, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The book begins with an introductory chapter, “Water Conservation for Agriculture,” that describes the primary areas of water conservation for crop production under rain-fed or irrigated land conditions. The authors explain in detail how water derived from precipitation must be captured, retained, and used efficiently for producing a desirable yield. The authors also describe how the efficient use of the captured and retained water is largely influenced by the management practices being used, including crop selection, irrigation methods, and cropping systems. Chapters 2 through 9 focus on advances in soil and water conservation in… ER -
