AB Horses have nearly disappeared from America's rural landscape, but horse populations are increasing in and near urban areas where they are kept for recreational purposes. While having created a multi-billion dollar industry, this phenomenen so far has not stimulated enough research to develop needed land or recreational management strategies. A documentation of the increasing interest in horses for recreational purposes and an outline of some unanswered questions regarding the land use implications of this trend are long overdue.
