AB  - Soil water measurements (by the neutron method)during the growing season indicated that water use by sunflowers (Helianthus annus L.) compares with water use by corn (Zea mays La). These results suggest that the sunflower's capacity for producing a crop in situations where water stress restricts corn production is because of a drought stress escape mechanism rather than because of lower water requirements.
