These methods may be used to produce a single statistic describing diversity within recreation supply inventories if types of facilities are equated with species and sites are equated with individuals. Shannon, Simpson, and evenness indexes are experimentally derived for a limited amount of data. The results indicate that the indexes possess considerable analytical power, but are of limited use as planning tools.
