It was a term Savory himself says he resented. Yet it reflects the charismatic teaching style that has helped win him a growing following for his ideas on natural resources management. His philosophy of “Holistic Resource Management,” supporters say, represents a practical solution to desertification of the world's rangelands. More than 700 ranchers and range professionals have attended Savory's intensive, week-long training seminars in his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and other sites. He has received a federal grant to train Soil Conservation Service, Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management personnel. Magnifying the impact of this work has been an ongoing debate about his ideas in the agricultural press and professional journals. A political exile from Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia), Savory is probably still best known for the wagon-wheel fencing design he imported to America and popularized.
