The method, based on the universal soil loss equation, recognizes the importance of maintaining long-term soil productivity, preventing erosion losses from reaching critical levels in forested environments, and preventing aesthetically displeasing modifications of the natural character of these environments. The method assumes that a minimum standard of 70% groundcover in contact with the soil surface would be an acceptable management objective to preserve the character of natural areas used for outdoor recreation.
