YR 1984 UL http://www.jswconline.org/content/39/6/383.abstract AB A method for estimating the physical carrying capacity of natural areas for outdoor recreation planning takes into account soil characteristics, topographic variations, rainfall velocities and intensities, and vegetative characteristics. The method, based on the universal soil loss equation, recognizes the importance of maintaining long-term soil productivity, preventing erosion losses from reaching critical levels in forested environments, and preventing aesthetically displeasing modifications of the natural character of these environments. The method assumes that a minimum standard of 70% groundcover in contact with the soil surface would be an acceptable management objective to preserve the character of natural areas used for outdoor recreation.
